At The Balanced Practice, we are committed to eradicating eating disorders and proving the power of healing. We support folks of all genders and ages who are ready to recover from their eating disorder. Recovering from binge eating is not easy, however, it is possible, and you deserve recovery.
Binge eating disorder, or BED, is a complex eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating (consuming large amounts of food in a short period, often accompanied by a sense of loss of control). Unlike bulimia nervosa, individuals with BED do not engage in compensatory behaviors such as purging. Folks who experience binge eating will often experience a great sense of emotional distress, guilt, and shame around the binge eating behavior. Body image challenges are frequently part of this eating disorder as well.
Folks who struggle with binge eating will often restrict their food intake (which is the main issue that leads to binge eating episodes). However, because of the culture we live in (i.e. diet culture), the restriction part is often praised whereas binge eating is shamed, which creates a barrier to accessing support.
Binge eating involves food, but it is NOT just about the food. It impacts the person’s physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.
There is not one factor that leads to the development of binge eating. The onset is often impacted by various factors, such as:
One thing is clear though, it is not your fault, and you did not choose this.
Recovery from binge eating disorder is possible with the right treatment and support. Your experience with binge eating is unique, and your treatment needs to reflect your uniqueness. There is no one-size-fits-all to recovery.
The initial stages of the treatment of binge eating disorder will often include nutrition rehabilitation, body safety, and emotion regulation (distress tolerance).
As you progress in treatment, your team will support you with building confidence with food and your body while addressing any maintaining factors and any underlying issues.
