The unfortunate influence of diet culture has led many women to believe in a restrictive approach to their pregnancy and postpartum journey. While nutrition science is clear that any restriction is absolutely not recommended, it can be extremely difficult to navigate how to properly nourish our bodies during this stage. Diet culture places a massive amount of pressure on women’s (and pregnant people’s) bodies to look a certain way during pregnancy and postpartum. These societal body ideals can have a major impact on one’s body image and sense of self, especially with the inevitable body changes that come along with pregnancy.

On top of all the diet culture messages, there are a lot of misconceptions that can lead to increased stress and anxiety during this season.

Here are 3 misconceptions we often encounter:

  • “Pregnancy is always blissful”:
While pregnancy is a unique and beautiful experience, it can also be quite challenging physically and emotionally. Acknowledging the nuance in pregnancy is extremely important to normalize this experience.
  • “Postpartum depression is rare”:
Postpartum depression impacts around 15% of new mothers globally. It is not rare. And you are not the only one struggling. This is not an indication of you as a parent. This is a mental health struggle and there is help available for you.
  • “Losing weight before getting pregnant is recommended”:
Absolutely not. Losing weight while trying to get pregnant is contraindicated and can increase the risk of fertility challenges.

Pregnancy and postpartum can have a significant impact on your relationship with food and body. If you have a history of an eating disorder, it is important to acknowledge this intersection to ensure you receive the support you may need. As pregnancy will inevitably lead to changes in your nutritional needs and your body size, this time in your life may also lead to disordered eating patterns and body image issues. In the postpartum period, similar challenges with food and body may occur or persist, on top of navigating the new routines and responsibilities that come along with parenthood. Accessing support from an eating disorder informed team is vital to ensure you are taking care of your physical and mental wellbeing at this time.
