Neurodivergence is an umbrella term encompassing a range of neurodevelopmental variations, including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and more. ADHD is estimated to affect around 5-10% of children and adolescents worldwide, with a significant number continuing to experience symptoms into adulthood.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that has 3 different subtypes:

  • Impulsive/Hyperactive type.
  • Inattentive and distractible type.
  • Combined type.

Historically, ADHD has been underdiagnosed in girls and women. Recent research is shedding light on the unique presentation of ADHD in females, highlighting the need for gender-informed diagnosis and treatment.

We know that neurodivergent folks are more prone to mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, burnout and eating disorders. This is why getting proper support is extremely important for overall health.

Common Misconceptions about Neurodivergence

Misconceptions about ADHD and neurodivergence Ottawa, ON | The Balanced Practice Inc
  • “ADHD is just a lack of discipline”: ADHD is a neurobiological condition, not a result of laziness or lack of discipline.
  • “Neurodivergent folks are less smart or less able”. Absolutely not. Neurodivergence refers to a brain that functions differently than a typical brain and is not a reflection of intelligence or ability. This leads to difficulties in our society because our society is designed for neurotypical folks but NOT because there is something wrong with being neurodivergent. Breaking the neurotypical standards of success and allowing space for folks to explore their own uniqueness and ability is important for personal fulfillment and happiness.
  • “ADHD only affects children”: ADHD often persists into adulthood, impacting various aspects of life, including work, relationships, and overall well-being. Due to misinformation about ADHD and its presentation many folks only get diagnosed in adulthood. This is particularly true for women.
  • “All neurodivergent individuals are the same”: Neurodivergence is diverse and encompasses a range of conditions that are all on a spectrum. Each individual’s experience is unique, and personalized support is key.
  • “Medication is the only solution”: While medication can be a helpful part of a treatment plan, holistic interventions, including nutrition counselling,  therapy, and lifestyle adjustments, are essential for comprehensive support.
