Eating Disorder Therapy | The Balanced Practice Inc | Ottawa, ON

Eating disorders don’t exist in isolation. They impact the entire family system and how you communicate, how you connect, how you share meals and how safe your home environment feels.

It can be confusing, exhausting, and overwhelming to know what to say or how to help without making things worse. We get it. Our team understands the complexity of eating disorders and the impact they have on families, so we intentionally include loved ones in the recovery process whenever possible.

Because no two families, or eating disorder presentations, look the same, our support is never one-size-fits-all. The Balanced Practice offers a range of family-centred services led by experienced and compassionate clinicians. Our services include individual and family therapy, educational programs, and facilitated support groups. Our goal is to equip families with the understanding, skills, and support they need, so recovery feels more sustainable, more connected, and less heavy for everyone involved.

Why Family Involvement in Recovery Matters

Meal Support | The Balanced Practice Inc | Ottawa, ON

1. It improves treatment outcomes

Decades of research, across adolescents and adults, and clinical experience shows that recovery is stronger when families are involved. Clients make more progress, stay engaged in treatment longer, and have better long-term outcomes when the people around them understand how to support the process.

2. It reduces caregiver stress and burnout

Eating disorders place significant emotional and practical demands on families. Providing caregivers with skills, structure, and support reduces overwhelm, increases confidence, and leads to more effective, sustainable support at home.

3. It strengthens the recovery environment

Healing doesn’t only happen in session. When families learn how to respond to ED behaviours, support regular eating, navigate distress, and reduce unintentional reinforcement of symptoms, the home environment becomes safer and more recovery-aligned.

4. It improves communication and lowers conflict

Research shows that when families share a common understanding of the eating disorder, and learn concrete communication tools, there’s less escalation, less misinterpretation, and more productive problem-solving.

5. It protects relationships during a challenging time

EDs can strain connection and create fear, confusion, or distance. Family involvement helps rebuild trust and establishes a shared language, so the relationship can remain a source of support rather than stress.

The evidence is clear: when families are meaningfully involved in eating disorder recovery, in ways that are safe, informed, and supportive, treatment outcomes significantly improve. And yet, many families are left on the sidelines of treatment, feeling overwhelmed, unsure, and under-resourced. Most caregivers want to help deeply, but without guidance, even well-intentioned support can unintentionally reinforce eating disorder patterns.

This is why we created the Family Support Program for Eating Disorder care. This clinician-led, online program is designed to educate, support, and empower parents, caregivers, and partners as active members of the recovery process. You’ll gain practical, evidence-informed tools while being supported by experienced eating disorder clinicians and alongside other families who truly understand the day-to-day realities of loving someone with an eating disorder. You don’t have to figure this out alone.

1:1 Caregiver Support

Supporting a loved one through eating disorder recovery matters deeply and it can also be exhausting. At The Balanced Practice, we believe caregivers deserve care, guidance, and space too.

Our 1:1 caregiver support session, led by specialized registered dietitians and/or therapists, offer individualized support for parents, partners, and loved ones. These sessions are a place to offload the mental weight, make sense of what’s coming up, and get practical, evidence-informed guidance tailored to your situation. We focus on helping you feel more grounded, supported, and confident.

By caring for yourself and receiving the right support, you’re better able to show up for your loved one in ways that are sustainable, compassionate, and recovery-supportive.

About Us | The Balanced Practice Inc | Ottawa, ON

Eating disorder recovery isn’t only about healing someone’s relationship with food and body, it’s also about tending to the family dynamics and relationships. At The Balanced Practice, family therapy is a space for families to come together with guidance, care, and intention.

Our therapists work collaboratively with families to strengthen communication, reduce conflict and confusion, and build a shared understanding of recovery. Sessions focus on developing practical tools, increasing emotional safety, and supporting each family member in their role, without blame or judgment.

The goal of family therapy is not perfection, but connection. Together, we help families create a more supportive, recovery-oriented environment where everyone feels heard, understood, and better equipped to move forward.

Why Families Choose The Balanced Practice

1. Coordinated, interdisciplinary care
Your family isn’t getting isolated support. Our dietitians, therapists, and support team work together, behind the scenes, to ensure consistent guidance, shared language, and treatment that actually aligns across providers.

2. Evidence-informed support you can use in real life
We translate research into practical tools: how to support meals, navigate distress, interrupt ED patterns, and communicate effectively. You leave with strategies that make day-to-day recovery feel more doable, not more overwhelming.

3. A compassionate, non-blaming approach
Families are doing their best with what they’ve been taught. We meet you with empathy and clarity, offering support that reduces guilt, increases confidence, and helps you feel steadier in a very challenging situation.

4. Support that strengthens both recovery and relationships
Our work doesn’t just improve symptoms, it supports family dynamics, encourages meaningful repairs and creates a more stable recovery environment. You learn how to show up in ways that protect your loved one and your own wellbeing.
